چکیده مقاله
The intensifying global water crisis has driven an increase in desalination technologies to augment freshwater supplies. However, this process concurrently produces substantial volumes of brine, which poses significant environmental challenges. Characterized by elevated salinity, temperature, and often laden with contaminants, brine discharges can disrupt marine ecosystems, contaminate groundwater, and exacerbate soil salinization. To mitigate these impacts, this study investigates advanced brine management strategies. The research encompasses a comprehensive analysis of minimization techniques, including membrane-based, thermal-based, and emerging approaches, to reduce brine volume and concentration. Furthermore, the study explores the potential for recovering valuable resources, such as salts, minerals, and chemicals, from brine through innovative treatment and reuse process. By critically evaluating existing practices and identifying knowledge gaps, this work provides insights into developing sustainable and economically viable brine management solutions. Ultimately, the integration of these strategies is essential for ensuring the long-term viability and environmental sustainability of desalination as a water supply option.
