چکیده مقاله |
This study evaluated the treatability of industrial wastewater containing furfural, a highly toxic volatile organic compound known to persist in aquatic ecosystems. Utilizing a pilot-scale Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor, we explored a promising biotechnological solution for enzymatic degradation of these resilient pollutants. Given growing environmental concerns regarding furfural discharge, it is crucial to develop effective remediation strategies. A carefully designed series of experiments clarified the operational parameters influencing the furfural degradation kinetics. The hydraulic retention time (HRT) was maintained at 24 h, and the temperature was maintained at 32°C for all concentrations. Consequently, an increase in the organic loading rate (OLR) was observed in response to furfural concentrations ranging from 300 to 1200 mg/L. This approach enabled a comprehensive evaluation of OLR's impact of OLR on bioconversion efficiency along with measurements of mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS), mixed liquor volatile suspended solids (MLVSS), and biogas production rates. The findings revealed significant correlations between these parameters and the overall efficacy of furfural removal, with optimal conditions achieving substantial reductions in chemical oxygen demand (COD) and enhanced biogas production. This study highlights the potential of UASB technology for sustainable wastewater management, achieving average removal efficiencies of 99% for furfural and 97% for COD across all concentrations, underscoring the viability of anaerobic treatment of complex industrial wastewater. |
